Stand Up for National Public Radio

NPR LogoNPR has contributed to every area of American life in significantly positive ways for decades. Maintaining the highest standards of integrity in journalism is simply integral to the nature of public media, and its foremost responsibility. NPR was recently forced to protect that integrity by firing Juan Williams after he made some shocking statements on a FOX News show (Bill O’Reilly).

Now, the right-wing rabble-rousers like Sarah Palin are pressuring Congress to cut or end funding for NPR–and not just NPR, but PBS and all other public media as well. This latest Juan WIlliams event is simply the excuse the extremists have grasped to do what they’ve long wanted. Not only does public media provide a uniquely independent view, it represents one of the last grasps of intelligencia as a portion of revered culture in America.

The Republican party — and its “Tea Party” cult — are advocates of ignorance. As Isaac Asimov puts it: “Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that ‘my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'”

The reasons for this are well beyond this single post, so we’ll delve into that in the future. My hope today is to ask for your help in fighting this attack on NPR, PBS and public media. The folks at Credo Action have a petition to Congress to stand up for public media. I urge you to sign it today.

Peace out……
